“Temple By Night”

Original oil on canvas 80cm x 80cm S$2800.00

This painting is part of a collection work I produced while studying Indian Temples. I drew inspiration from Sri Mariamman Temple. This is the oldest temple in Singapore, and is located paradoxically in the centre of Chinatown. Dating back to 1827, the exquisite temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, a Hindu deity known for curing illness, disease and epidemics. There are elements from other studies from similar temples included within the painting. I was initially drawn towards the colourful ornate architecture and the more I recorded elements I new I would be inspired to produce a new series of work. In this painting I have designed the layout to represent an opening into a new world of images. It’s how I viewed these temples for the first time. I used a framing element allowing the spectator to look inside the painting and then take a tour.
