“Garlands Before Celebrations”

Original oil on canvas   91cm x 61cm S$2200.00

I made numerous trips to Little India in Singapore. My aim was to record as many references that I could find to enable a series of paintings and mixed media work. I discovered a real sense of culture within Little India – all of which can be recognised through food, architecture, the temples, the diversity in shops and generally I loved how busy the atmosphere was in the area. This painting was based on my recordings of temples and shops. I have simplified the images that are included in the composition. Firstly, I have represented the garlands as three semicircular patterns. I loved the colourful garlands that street vendors were selling. I also wanted to represent the architecture of the temples. The images are simplified designs that balance the perspective of the painting. The two hands I chose to include represent the link between the Indian people who prepare for the visit to the temples, some purchasing garlands and other neck decorations to celebrate an event.
