“Chinese Temple Memories”
Original oil and mixed media on canvas 81cm x 81cm S$2800.00
This particular painting was primarily based on a visit to the Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore. It is actually the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore. Dedicated to Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea, early Chinese immigrants came to the temple to give thanks for their safe passage across the South China Sea. I was fascinated by all the architectural elements the vibrant colours and ornate motifs. I was particularly drawn to the detailed carvings and sculptures of dragons, phoenixes and deities, as well as the colourful broken porcelain on the roof ridges, a Fujian decorating technique. I made several studies before thinking about a painting project. I wanted to reflect the essence of my trip and be able to combine all the different elements that had a profound effect on me. The final result of the work illustrates a composite of several elements which best describes the environment and mood I experienced that day.
